REMEMBERING WORLD WAR TWO: FIFTY YEARS LATER

By John Francis Englert, President, Ford City Area Hall of Fame

August 14, 1995 marked the ending of World War Two, a half century ago. 1995 has been a special year for all of us to remember those war years between December 7, 1941 when our country was suddenly involved in a world war with the attack on Pearl Harbor and 1945 when the war ended almost as suddenly with the birth of the atomic age. These past four days the Ford City Area Hall of Fame has sponsored a number of activities that were intended to encourage all of us to remember and to honor our veterans of that war, particularly those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. In keeping with our by-laws, our Board is honoring men and women of our area who have done outstanding things to make the Ford City area a better place to live. This year, however, inductees must be veterans. We have encouraged people to remember God, home and family. Together we have enjoyed concerts, parades, museums and the company of good friends and neighbors. We hope our love of freedom has been strengthened. If it has, our Board will take pride in a noteworthy accomplishment. This booklet has been prepared to help us remember. Naturally, we are limited by space and finances, so this booklet has been designed to present a few thoughts about those days we lived through the 1940s.
